How To Install A Custom Rom For Android Phones

This guide will show you how to install a custom rom on your android device

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU START ANYTHING!:

I am not responsible for any kind of damage you do to your android device
(This doesnt really mean you will damage your android device, theres a really rare chance something bad happens, but thats only if you do something wrong)

Your android device should be rooted.

Please read this entire instructable before actually doing the steps written in it.

Now i know you can find alot of websites and different guides on how to install a new custom rom, but i thought i can put one here too and be as detailed as i can.

Step 1: Things You Should Have

1- A rooted android device :)

2- A USB cable

3- A computer

4- An internet connection

Step 2: Getting Started

First you have to find a custom rom that you like for your phone

a good place to look is in xda forums
http://www.xda-developers.com/

i use google search, i find it easier, but be detailed wen u search, ill use my galaxy s4 i9500 as an example:
type in something like:
"best custom roms for samsung galaxy s4 i9500"

after you find one, make sure its available for your phone, and for your specific variant
for example in the s4, theres more than one variant, theres the i9500, i9505 and more
so make sure its your specific device and variant you are looking for

download it to your computer

as you might already know, your device needs to be rooted in order for you to install the custom rom

most custom roms that you download will not have the google apps with them pre-installed, you can tell if theyre pre-installed or not from the custom rom's developer webpage, or in their xda page

if the google apps arent pre-installed, also download them to your computer (theyre known as gapps)
the gapps should be compatible with the android version youre going to get, for example the the rom you are getting is based on android 4.4 kitkat, then the gapps should be compatible with android 4.4 kitkat

and some custom roms has their own gapps, so make sure you download their gapps package if they tell you to

Step 3: Getting The Phone Ready For The Custom Rom

Connect your phone to the computer

And move the custom rom you downloaded and the gapps (theyre both probably zipped files, leave them the way they are) to your phone

turn your phone OFF and go to recovery mode
going into recovery mode varies from one phone to another or from one brand to another

for my samsung galaxy s4 its pressing and holding the VOLUME UP and the HOME button and the POWER button all together in the same time

as soon as you see the samsung logo stop holding the buttons, now youre in recovery mode (in the picture)

your recovery might not look exactly the same, or have the same colours, but thats normal because there are many different recoveries out there

before you begin i recommend making a full backup, also called a NANDROID BACKUP, this backs up everything in your phone, so that if anything goes wrong or even if you just didnt like the custom rom you just installed, you can come back here and simply restore it to the way it was before you changed the software

navigate to WIPE CACHE PARTITION and then confirm you want to wipe the cache partition
(depending on your recovery, you can navigate using the volume up/down buttons and the power button as the enter key, or it might be touch)

when thats done, navigate to WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET then confirm you want to wipe the data

this will not delete your personal files (music, pictures, videos, files)

some custom roms also require from you to delete the dalvik cache too, you can know if you should delete it or not from the custom rom's developer webpage

if you have to delete it, then also, depending on your recovery, it might be in different places
its mainly under ADVANCED

Step 4: Installing The Custom Rom

Now that you did everything mentioned before, its time to install the custom rom into your phone

while still in recovery mode, navigate to INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD

then, depending where you put the files in your phone, internal or external sd card, navigate to CHOOSE ZIP FROM SD CARD or CHOOSE ZIP FROM EXTERNAL SD CARD

now navigate to the place where you put the custom rom and gapps

then select the custom rom FIRST, then confirm you want to install it

wait for it to be installed

after thats done, do the same thing, but instead of choosing the custom rom, choose the gapps

some custom roms need to be used before installiing gapps, you can know from the custom rom's developer webpage, if they didnt mention anything about this, just install the gapps directly after the custom rom

after you install the custom rom and gapps, go back to the main menu of the recovery, and select REBOOT SYSTEM NOW

this will restart your phone, with the new custom rom, the first time it starts it might take a few minutes, so dont worry about that

but if it takes a long time, this means something is wrong, if youre good at rooting and phones you can find a solution for that, if not, i suggest u just go back to recovery mode and restore the backup that you did before you installed this new custom rom

if everything works alright, your phone will boot to the new custom rom you installed, enjoy!

Step 5: Help In Finding A Custom Rom

I personally used and tried:
Cyanogenmod (http://cyanogenmod.org/)

AOKP (http://aokp.co/)

Omega (http://omegadroid.co/omega_rom_series/)

MIUI (http://en.miui.com/)

i tried more but these are the most popular and the best ones

Cyanogenmod has the pure android look with lots of features to choose from, and has alot of supported devices for it

AOKP is also based on the pure android look with lots of features to choose from, it can be hard to choose sides between this and Cyanogenmod because theyre both good and has their own unique features

Omega is based on samsung's Touchwiz UI, i think its only for samsung phones, dont quote me though :) im not 100% sure. it has many of touchwiz features and removed bloatware

MIUI has a completely different and new android look to it, when you first try it you will notice it has some similarities with apple's IOS, because it doesnt have an app drawer, everything is on the homescreens, and also the settings UI looks a little bit like the IOS settings UI. at the time of writing this im using MIUI on my galaxy s4 and its amazing, theres alot of themes for i

Best custom ROMs for Android: 5 awesome UI's to make your smartphone even better

While you might enjoy the way your smartphone interface looks and feels, you may not have realized just how different things can be. Custom ROMs give you the opportunity to explore all new designs and UIs for your device, as well as all-new (and often very impressive) functionality. If you are yet to explored the hidden pleasures of the Android community, here is our list of the best custom ROMs for Android.

CyanogenMod 11 - stable, stylish, with frequent updates

CyanogenMod is one of the most well-supported ROMs for Android, with a huge community, and frequent updates; it’s no wonder that this popular Android ROM even managed to find a home on last years OnePlus One.
Features of CyanogenMod include its unique app launcher entitled Trebuchet, personal themes, video screenshots via its "Screencast" functionality, and a mode specifically for viewing left-handed in landscape. Currently supported on more than 50 devices, look out for integration with Lollipop coming soon.

Paranoid Android - Stock Android with subtle changes

The first appearance of the Paranoid Android Custom ROM dates back to early 2013, for Android Jelly Bean. The Paranoid Android ROM doesn't have a radical design overhaul, instead it focuses on a number of simple but effective changes to notifications and navigation.
Immersive mode allows you to view information on screen while hiding system bars, and "dynamic system bars" blends your status and navigation bar color with the particular app background. It's purely aesthetic, but provides a nice transition nonetheless.
Paranoid Android is available for a whole range of devices including the Nexus line and the OnePlus One. To learn more, visit ParanoidAndroid.co.

OmniROM - for the OmniSwitch toolbar

Designed by former CyanogenMod devs (Xplodwild, Chainfire, Dees_Troy, Pulser and Entropy) in late 2013, OmniROM is a no-frills ROM, basically offering the Stock Android experience with some nice extras.
OmniROM supports the ability to launch apps by tapping on the time and date in the notifications menu, it can add a notification counter in the status bar to show the number notifications you've received, and has the ability to manage the display brightness just by sliding your finger along the notifications bar.
OmniROM's standout feature, however, is the "OmniSwitch" shortcut. The OmniSwitch is a quick-menu which you can load with shortcuts and jump from any part of your phone to any app, or vice versa, and it is completely customizable.
Lollipop nightlies for OmniROM will be arriving shortly, head to OmniROM.org for more.

SlimROMs - bloatless, but feature-rich

SlimROMs made a name for itself by offering a completely stripped down version of Android and letting you determine exactly how much of the Google Play services you want bundled in. Otherwise, SlimROMs is characterized by the ability to modify the DPI of fonts and icons and make everything as tiny as you need it to be. The Slim family currently supports almost 50 devices, but is yet to be ported to any current-gen handsets. Find out more at slimroms.net.

AOKP - for complete control and tons of customization options

Android Open Kang Project, or AOKP, is aimed at serious Android modders, and those with good level of technical know-how. Released in September 2013, AOKP is now compatible with dozens of Android devices, and houses a number of interesting features, like the ability to customize shortcuts in the quick settings menu, and manage the color and blink rate of the LED notifications in several applications.
Additionally, this ROM also includes a feature called "Navigation ring", which acts an an intuitive shortcut for up to five apps. As if that wasn't enough, application permissions management and the ability to adjust processor performance are there, make this one of the most interesting Custom ROMs on android.
Stable releases are far and few between but after a break from October last year, a post on the AOKP website in March revealed that work would soon be starting on "proper" Lollipop builds. We'll be keeping an eye on this one. To learn more, visit AOKP.co.

The custom ROM database

Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive and you might want to do a little more research into other custom ROMs that are currently available. Thankfully, the fine ladies and gents over at the XDA Developers Forum have put together a custom ROM database that compares all the features of the major custom ROMs at a glance. It's a great resource.

How to Hack Wi-Fi: Cracking WPA2-PSK Passwords Using Aircrack-Ng

Welcome back, my greenhorn hackers.
When Wi-Fi was first developed in the late 1990s, Wired Equivalent Privacy was created to give wireless communications confidentiality. WEP, as it became known, proved terribly flawed and easily cracked. You can read more about that in my beginner's guide to hacking Wi-Fi.
As a replacement, most wireless access points now use Wi-Fi Protected Access II with a pre-shared key for wireless security, known as WPA2-PSK. WPA2 uses a stronger encryption algorithm, AES, that's very difficult to crack—but not impossible. My beginner's Wi-Fi hacking guide also gives more information on this.
The weakness in the WPA2-PSK system is that the encrypted password is shared in what is known as the 4-way handshake. When a client authenticates to the access point (AP), the client and the AP go through a 4-step process to authenticate the user to the AP. If we can grab the password at that time, we can then attempt to crack it.
In this tutorial from our Wi-Fi Hacking series, we'll look at using aircrack-ngand a dictionary attack on the encrypted password after grabbing it in the 4-way handshake. If you're looking for a faster way, I suggest you also check out my article on hacking WPA2-PSK passwords using coWPAtty.

Step 1: Put Wi-Fi Adapter in Monitor Mode with Airmon-Ng

Let's start by putting our wireless adapter in monitor mode. For info on what kind of wireless adapter you should have, check out this guide. This is similar to putting a wired adapter into promiscuous mode. It allows us to see all of the wireless traffic that passes by us in the air. Let's open a terminal and type:
  • airmon-ng start wlan0
Note that airmon-ng has renamed your wlan0 adapter to mon0.

Step 2: Capture Traffic with Airodump-Ng

Now that our wireless adapter is in monitor mode, we have the capability to see all the wireless traffic that passes by in the air. We can grab that traffic by simply using the airodump-ng command.
This command grabs all the traffic that your wireless adapter can see and displays critical information about it, including the BSSID (the MAC address of the AP), power, number of beacon frames, number of data frames, channel, speed, encryption (if any), and finally, the ESSID (what most of us refer to as the SSID). Let's do this by typing:
  • airodump-ng mon0
Note all of the visible APs are listed in the upper part of the screen and the clients are listed in the lower part of the screen.

Step 3: Focus Airodump-Ng on One AP on One Channel

Our next step is to focus our efforts on one AP, on one channel, and capture critical data from it. We need the BSSID and channel to do this. Let's open another terminal and type:
  • airodump-ng --bssid 08:86:30:74:22:76 -c 6 --write WPAcrack mon0
  • 08:86:30:74:22:76 is the BSSID of the AP
  • -c 6 is the channel the AP is operating on
  • WPAcrack is the file you want to write to
  • mon0 is the monitoring wireless adapter*
As you can see in the screenshot above, we're now focusing on capturing data from one AP with a ESSID of Belkin276 on channel 6. The Belkin276 is probably a default SSID, which are prime targets for wireless hacking as the users that leave the default ESSID usually don't spend much effort securing their AP.

Step 4: Aireplay-Ng Deauth

In order to capture the encrypted password, we need to have the client authenticate against the AP. If they're already authenticated, we can de-authenticate them (kick them off) and their system will automatically re-authenticate, whereby we can grab their encrypted password in the process. Let's open another terminal and type:
  • aireplay-ng --deauth 100 -a 08:86:30:74:22:76 mon0
  • 100 is the number of de-authenticate frames you want to send
  • 08:86:30:74:22:76 is the BSSID of the AP
  • mon0 is the monitoring wireless adapter

Step 5: Capture the Handshake

In the previous step, we bounced the user off their own AP, and now when they re-authenticate, airodump-ng will attempt to grab their password in the new 4-way handshake. Let's go back to our airodump-ng terminal and check to see whether or not we've been successful.
Notice in the top line to the far right, airodump-ng says "WPA handshake." This is the way it tells us we were successful in grabbing the encrypted password! That is the first step to success!

Step 6: Let's Aircrack-Ng That Password!

Now that we have the encrypted password in our file WPAcrack, we can run that file against aircrack-ng using a password file of our choice. Remember that this type of attack is only as good as your password file. I'll be using the default password list included with aircrack-ng on BackTrack nameddarkcOde.
We'll now attempt to crack the password by opening another terminal and typing:
  • aircrack-ng WPAcrack-01.cap -w /pentest/passwords/wordlists/darkc0de
  • WPAcrack-01.cap is the name of the file we wrote to in the airodump-ng command
  • /pentest/passwords/wordlist/darkc0de is the absolute path to your password file

How Long Will It Take?

This process can be relatively slow and tedious. Depending upon the length of your password list, you could be waiting a few minutes to a few days. On my dual core 2.8 gig Intel processor, it's capable of testing a little over 500 passwords per second. That works out to about 1.8 million passwords per hour. Your results will vary.
When the password is found, it'll appear on your screen. Remember, the password file is critical. Try the default password file first and if it's not successful, advance to a larger, more complete password file such as one of these.

Stay Tuned for More Wireless Hacking Guides

Keep coming back, as I promise more advanced methods of hacking wireless in future tutorials. If you haven't seen the other Wi-Fi hacking guides yet, check them out here. Particularly the one on hacking WEP using aircrack-ng and hacking WPA2-PSK passwords using coWPAtty.
And as always, if you have questions on any of this, please ask away in the comments below. If it's something unrelated, try asking in the Null Byte forum.
